- A friend of mine with a Compaq Presario (which has enough proprietary things
- in there to drive me mad) and a new Boca MV.34AI. The problem is that if I
- disable the built in modem via the SETUP program most things realize that the
- modem is gone- but the software that Boca uses to for the modem (the modem
- doesn't exist at all without the software since it uses the cheap AT&T
- controllerless chipset) DOES see it. Actually, it doesn't see the IRQ (3) but
- DOES see the physical port (COM2). Compaq wants to charge $35 to tell me which
- jumper on the motherboard disables it... So I'm using other COM and IRQ
- settings (manually changing them in the software and the physical jumpers.)
- Even though I now am on an unused COM port AND IRQ (an odd COM 3 IRQ 3 - I
- don't remember why I'm not using the standard COM4 IRQ3) with a mouse on COM1
- IRQ4 and the disabled modem COM2 IRQ 3. The following problems still occur. A)
- Once in a while the mouse pointer disappears (randomly- once I loaded control
- panel - gone... I reload win and retry it works fine- Then it disappears when
- I do something else). Comm programs work without interruption- the nmouse
- disappears when I'm not even using the modem... I don't see any conflicts with
- the mouse/modem via IRQs or Port.... B) According to the owner the old fax
- program (came with computer) doesn't work. Haven't tried new software. It MAY
- be due to program being CLASS 2 only (anybody know if MAXFAX is Class2
- only?) and new modem Class 1 only. C) Text on 28.8 connect comes slowly - my
- guess is that the other sides port is probably locked too high- but is there a
- known problem with the modem? Binary transfers are slow -Connected at 28.8 and
- getting only 2100 or so CPS.... D) Known problem- can't run DOS comm program
- in Windows since Dos programs want the standard COM port /IRQ settings (eg COM
- 3 IRQ4 even if modem is COM3 IRQ3) while in Windows you need the actuall COM
- port/IRQ settings.
-
- Conclusion: The non-standard Presario + nonstandard (eg controllerless) AT&T
- chipset aren't a good combination. Since the modem exists via software only-
- diagnostic programs don't give consistant answers.... It's very hard to locate
- the problems!
-
- IS there anywhere I can get tech info about the AT&T chipset (eg website)?
- Thanks alot.
